Last night when I laid down to sleep, I kept dreaming that the bunny broke out of her cage and was jumping on me in bed. I kept getting up and putting her back. All of this felt hyper real, yet I began to question the experience but couldn’t see well enough to count my fingers. When I went out into the hallway, I could see that I had extra fingers and so I went outside to explore.

It was night outside and yet plenty light enough to see clearly. I found this huge tree where this kid was running around in it’s higher branches, so I flew/climbed up there and he said that the tree grants wishes if you say your wish while running around the branches. I didn’t really know what to wish for, but when I saw the moon it made me think of Clay from my stories and I absolutely wanted to summon him.

I start yelling for Clay to appear and finally he steps out from a portal onto one of the giant branches. He looks like a teenage peter capaldi, which is appropriate because I did fashion his character after doctor who. We go through his little portal that he emerged from, and when we did the dream goes into third person perspective and I’m transformed into a brunette female and we have a very doctor who-ish adventure on what seemed to be a luxury space cruiser.

I can’t remember exactly the storyline of that, or anything he said, probably because I was merely observing instead of directly experiencing it, and I lost lucidity quick. This dream eventually faded and when I found myself back in bed and lucid, I went back out and found the moon and called for Clay as much as I could but he didn’t come, even though a huge second moon appeared beside the dime-sized one and I began to fly to it but never reached it. (In the stories, Clay pilots a moon shaped spaceship)

Justin, I’m so curious about that lucid dream. You were lucid and you called Clay and he appeared. Is Clay a real personal or a fictional character, or both? How does that work? You remembered some excellent details.

Clay is a fictional character that I’ve been writing for off and on since 2003. He and Amy have always been together in many different iterations of stories, all called “Stars of Clay” which took place in a location called “Star City.” so both characters are very personal to me. In one iteration, Star City was a hidden retirement village in the mountains where the devil himself chose to retire and try to be a good person. In other stories, Star City is a space station. I never quite found footing with these characters until I decided to bring the dreaming element into play.

I’ve always seen Clay as myself, so it was surprising that he looked a bit different. He still looked like he fits the description I give in the stories: tall, brunette, lanky. But his face and hairstyle were different than how I typically imagine it, since I’ve always seen him in my own form.

I have always wanted to meet a story character in a dream, so it was very satisfying to do it. I was smiling all the next day about it. I hang out with my favorite movie and television show characters all the time in my dreams, but I’ve never met one of my own characters before. I’d love to meet Clay again and ask him how the next story should go.
