In Keith Gunnell’s book, Defenders Of The Light, real life astral projection events, that started spontaneously when Keith was only three years old, are blended seamlessly with fiction. As a little boy Keith experienced paranormal events that forever changed him and gave him the ability, as a man, to craft a book that is exciting and a lot of fun to read. Keith continues to experience the paranormal and has out of body experiences.

The 1950’s was a different time in many ways yet some folks gravitate to that period and want to resurrect all sorts of things they believe were “better”. Depending on a person’s willingness to openly review the past, the impact it had on others at the time, and accept the idea that nothing stays the same…..maybe….just maybe inner personal growth will happen for that person that by bringing back the past can, in fact, be a form of devolving. But accepting our current situation and improving it while we learn can help us move forward.
An example of this occurred with my mother. I was three when I had my first out of body experience (I didn’t know it at the time, but I became aware of what this was in my teens).
My father wanted to visit his brother and his family who lived in California. We lived in Michigan and in the mid-1950’s, especially given our poor economic state, this meant a long cross-country drive that would take several days.
During this adventure, my father wanted to stop for the night as we crossed the desert. We could afford one room, so the parents got the bed and the five kids found a spot on the floor to sleep. I curled up in a corner and at three it wasn’t too hard to drift off.
I was awakened in the middle of night by a loud rushing sound of some sort outside our motel room. Looking out the window, the day seemed to be well on its way because the sun was up. And, as a result, I could see something happening outside.
I felt a person next to me so I turned to look. A young woman was standing next to me with her hand on my shoulder. I didn’t know who she was because I had not seen her before. She was very nice, a slight smile with long, light colored hair, and her eyes seemed as if I could easily fall within her.
She said, “What do you see?”
Something about her seemed so comforting that without any concern I looked out the window and said, “It looks like a cloud spinning around really fast.” Years later, I would learn that what I was seeing was a Dust Devil which was common in the desert when the atmosphere was just right.
“That’s good…I think it’s time for us to go back to sleep now.,” she softly said.
We went back to the corner I had claimed for myself and laid down. I was soooo tired. When I curled up in my blanket, I felt her protectively curl up around me and I fell back into a deep sleep.
My mother woke me up later, it was obviously early in the morning. I sat there thinking about my new friend, but I didn’t see her so I asked my mom where she was. Mom looked at me like I was crazy. No one we didn’t know had entered the room during the night. So, I told her what happened and she wrote it off to the over-active imagination of a child.
Periodically, I would have similar experiences as I grew older and by the time I was in 6th grade, I was having what i relate to as full blown OBE’s that focused on specific people or events.
In one instance, I had a repetitive event occur that always had me chasing someone because I knew she was in trouble and i was trying to help. Each time the OBE would end with me trying to leap across a small creek, but tripping and doing a face-plant into vines covered in thorns. A deep, commanding voice would laugh and threaten me that if I didn’t stop, he would harm me. I felt that energy as being dark and ominous, but I didn’t stop.
Finally, one day at school my classmates were on recess and a friend came up to me and asked if i had seen anyone run off into the field behind our school. I said no, but she decided to go look for herself. As I watched her, she walked into the field but then disappeared in the tree line beyond.
Intuitively, I knew something was wrong so I enlisted some friends to become our search party while sending someone to the front office for help. We followed the route she had taken as we ran after her. Once in the tree line, I saw a creek just beyond and I tried leaping across, but tripped and fell into the vines covered in thorns just as I did in my repetitive OBE’s.
Once recovered, I continued to run and we finally caught with her. She was having a breakdown and crying uncontrollably. We were trying keep her from running off when her father and the Principal arrived to take her from us.
My mother had been threatening me about these OBE’s saying that if I didn’t stop, I would be dance’n with the Devil. After this event, though, she began to rethink what I was actually experiencing. So, in essence, she began to question her traditional, conservative Christian beliefs.
There are a ton of examples that speak to this issue. They are all around us if we are willing to open our minds and “SEE”. But, many of us do not care to have our belief systems questioned because that’s how we have defined our lives and it makes us nervous, to say the least, if we have to admit to ourselves that one or more of those beliefs were incorrect.
Admitting that a belief needs to change, though, is clear evidence of our evolving state as a spiritual being. Without these periodic changes, we would become stagnant creatures or worse….we would devolve into our distant past.
Just something to think about……
